Now the profile…

The profile doesn't look too bad in that pic. But I suspect at nearly 16mm high, it will feel huge on my wrist.

To further illustrate my pet peeve, here's my 14.5mm thick Carrera glassbox next to my 12mm vintage El Primero. Now I love my Dato 45, but a manual wind slimmer version would've been much better.

You can make it thinner, yes... but the centres of the chrono sub dials are fixed. If we crudely imagine 3mm off the diameter each side aren't the subdials going to end up too close the edge?
They could fit a 3 sub dial layout into the 39mm glassbox Carrera, so they could've made the Autavia a 40mm by altering the size of the sub dials slightly and trimming the bezel. The biggest issue I have with the top down view is the bezel is too fat, so this would fix that. (I'm talking about the Heritage model.)

Also, some other makers will revert to using other movements in order to achieve the dimensions of the originals. TAG has used other movements in the past (i.e. El Primero, Lemania etc.), they don't have to use the H02, but I can understand why they'd want to. In any case, for me it's more about getting the proportions right, rather than having it be the exact same size.

Honestly, I think the Heritage model is very nice, I've tried them on many times and came close to buying a few times. It's the thickness that always stopped me.

Yeah, I must admit I am less bothered about diameters and more bothered about thickness...

It’s not perfect, but my Autavia is my most worn watch. I love it!

It’s also the watch that non-watch people tend compliment the most (for what it’s worth).

I love mine too and enjoy the size, pop and automotive vibe. The mid case has a way of slimming the thickness of the watch down and the bezel with the smaller font seems to slim it a bit as well. As with all watches they really must be tried on to see how it works for you. Many of you have Monacos here and that seems just too chunky on my wrist but looks great on your wrists.

Neither of the new chronograph models work for me but maybe they will come out with something else that will as the year goes by. Fingers crossed

Looks so nice with the black strap. I find myself not wearing this one much because of the polished blingy bracelet.

That’s the part that keeps my collection interesting - a few good straps in ones collection helps with keeping it interesting and almost feels like adding a new watch to the collection 👍

Great shot! I'm with Holtz, looks awesome on that strap.

I hear you on the thickness. It's funny cuz I love the Monaco, but acknowledge it's a chunky watch. It's the same height as the glassbox Carrera but wears thicker in comparison. Yet it's still ok for my wrist somehow.

OTOH, I recently tried on a Speedmaster Mark II, which is supposed to be 15mm thick, slightly thinner than your Autavia. But boy it sure felt way thicker. Almost made the Autavia feel slim. Go figure? Lol

Look at how high the springbars are, and where the bracelet attaches. It’s horrible :/

Fortunately, original Mark IIs are only like &1500 or so and wear rather nicely. Go with one of those instead 😉

Yeah, I was thinking about an original. I tried on a new one just to see how it felt on my wrist, I know its slightly larger than the vintage ones, but not sure if the Mark II is for me.

Rindt, Siffert, Viceroy, Orange Boy, JH85

If you truly love motorsports and watches, the Heritage Autavias are a true fans’ treasure gems 😉 (aside from Monaco, Monza & Silverstone)

The crown really still looks like it was swapped over from another watch (at least to me)… I can’t get used to it on the chrono 😵‍💫

Good luck still finding a vintage Mark II in acceptable condition for 1500 (whatever the currency is)… 😉

I know the CoAx re-edition quite well and the well-balanced bracelet and the adjustable clasp help to wear it quite comfortably, actually. So it’s definitely not all in the dimensions.
