It's thicker, but also the modern Monaco is larger in all dimensions than the (already large) 1133. If you ever try on an original, it's striking how well-proportioned it is for such a chunky-looking design

Yea, most people are surprised to find out that the original 1133B/Gs aren't actually square - they're 38mm wide by 40mm high.

It does take some time to adjust or feel comfortable with a Monaco. But to be honest and I agree, that the 39mm doesn’t really feel to big to wear especially that most modern watches today, on the average, have a size around 41/42 mm. 👍

Two things I realized. First, the Monaco has been a favorite watch prop among TV, Movie, Media people. You can probably surmise that in this thread 😉 (Click Me) It all started from a movie were the characters were “driving in circles” Secondly, among my modest & humble collection, the Monaco is the most commented
& praised watch that I have worn (from WIS & non-WIS alike) It is quite unmistakable when you see a Monaco, which has always been the trademark square case 😀 Not everyone will want to wear a square watch, but at times, you wear a Monaco “to stand out” or to be seen 😉 It’s a bold statement saying “Hey, I’m wearing a square watch & I’m a car guy” 😜

It is the only iconic square chronograph that I can think of. The Cartier Santos also comes to mind but it’s a 3-hand, and it’s trademark design are the black roman numeral hour markers on white dial plus usually precious metal. All the others are mostly “rectangle” and not really square 😲

As far as other square/rectangular watches, the other two that come to mine are the Cartier Tank and the JLC Reverso. The Tank is decidedly dressy, and while the Reverso was technically developed to be a sports watch, for polo players, in 2021, it's also the definition of a dress watch, IMHO.

As far as true square/rectangular sports watches, the Monaco kind of stands alone, which just makes it that much cooler.

Not that I am in the market for a vintage model, but that lack of squareness bugs me whenever I see photographs of them.

My watch has been looked at by a few people who have no interest in m/sport or S. McQueen and have afterwards bought a Monaco of some design simply due to the square case, it was always referred to as ‘what’s that’-‘that’s unusual/strange/different’-‘does it come in other colours?’ and sometimes ‘how much?’.

Best Monaco they've done in my opinion.
Dark grey but from other angles looks as light as the face on the C

I absolutely love my 211P, but this is a close second. The one thing many complain about on the B is that the color of the subdial hands can be difficult to read in some lights.
