Please forgive a noob question... expanding interest from Omega - where dating is possible with reasonable certainly from the movement number, - to Heuer, and wondering if there any relationship between a Heuer serial/case number and date of production? Any pointers much appreciated

You can roughly date a Heuer to the year, but that's about it I'm afraid. Generally, serials reached the 6 digits sometime in 1969 and up til then it's not too difficult, but afterwards it starts to get a little harder.

Are there ranges documented anywhere that provide that rough dating - eg identify serial as from around, say, 1970 versus 1972? Assume higher the number the later the production across all models…

 

Not really, especially as batch production became much more commonplace after the Chronomatic models were introduced. 1970 would still have been in the lower 6-digits though whereas by 1972, we see 2xxxxx serials.
