does anyone know why some watchfaces make the operating system feel less snappy on the watch? does it get bogged down with too many layers? There are some designs I love but the performance of the watch really suffers and have a hard time sacrificing it.

Also ; is there any pc or online based solution to be able to create watch faces? I have watchmaker and have uploaded several faces but wasn't sure the best way to create my own or if there was a tutorial somewhere. Thanks!

Take a look at Watch Face Studio from Samsung. Originally it was only for making faces for Tizen Samsung watches. Now it's for Wear OS.

You can add a dark circle as a new layer, visible only in dimmed mode. Play with opacity of this layer, you can make it as dark as you want.
