Bargaining etiquette

I'm closer to pushing go on my coveted Monaco Calibre 11. I've been in twice to my nearest authorised dealer, and after lots of contemplation they've never indicated any pricing other than RRP.

I'm not sure whether to ask "is there any room to move on price", or if I should go in with a specific offer (e.g. 15% off) and see what happens.

Having next-to-no experience with this industry, I'm after some feedback as to what I could expect. Not sure if this is more of an industry where the price is the price, or if there's usually room to move. Not this is an AD, not a Tag-branded retail store.

No harm in asking, in my experience, it varies wildly between shops / sales assistants / time of the month etc, 10% isn't a bad point to aim for, but don't be surprised if you get stone walled, many shops and sales assistants are pretty inept when it comes to high street bartering.

I just bought a Monaco Calibre 11 that arrived yesterday! Decided to bite the bullet for my 21st. I've never even owned a watch before! I bought online and saved a fortune over buying one from my nearest dealer

Im sure most grey market dealers on C24 ship worldwide? Pluswatch is a trusted dealer with good reputation and a lot of watches in stock

There are some tricks of bargaining the "pro's" constantly refer to. Among these are always to try to bargain (a no doesn't hurt anything more than the ego) and to always set a price much lower than they are willing to give it away for (the seller think he makes a better deal and is, hypothetically, more inclined to say yes).

So when I bought my Autavia Heritage (in TH Boutique) I started to ask to get the price for approximately half the MSRP and then we took it from there.

Montredo seems to be a reputable seller if you want to go grey market, or maybe check around Chrono24. Just be sure to know your countries policy on VAT and customs fees...

I reckon you should aim for 35% off as an opening gambit and you should achieve a reasonable discount from there.

I like @Mr_Orange idea about the 35% gambit. I always do 50% gambit (of course, i did it light-heartedly as semi joke). Most of AD can tell whether you are serious or not. If you are serious about particular model, then they will be more likely to negotiate the price with you. If you have information about the other price from other AD might help as well and gave them the comparison it might help as well but never open it in advance just in case they might gave you more.

Let’s be honest you owe them nothing, so you should feel no shame in starting low. Always low ball - you don’t ask you won’t get.

It can always seem like you’re being a bit cheap, but never forget the rich don’t get rich by giving away their money.

Unlike Rolex dealers you can buy from TH dealers online, so always use internet pricing as a point for negotiation. Never expect to get the same pricing, but is a good point to raise in your discussions.

I just wanted to update this thread for anyone else in my position. I ended up close to buying a used model, but the prospect of wrongfully obtaining a fake at this price was scary. I decided for peace of mind I was happy to pay a little more for a new model. I haggled with my local dealer and we settled on a 20% discount. I thought this was excellent and didn't expect to get this low to be honest. I do know for a fact that they had had the actual watch on display in their shop for months and being an AD and not an actual Tag boutique, would already have paid for it. Had they needed to order one in, I think the discount would not have been close to this.

Always nice to see more Monaco's around here! I was in the same situation when I was out to buy my Autavia Heritage and the risk of buying a fake is always a huge concern for me. As a result of that, I'm more likely to pay a bit more when I am guaranteed it's an authentic model and especially if the guarantee and all the papers are in order.
20% feels like a good discount for the Monaco!

My first time purchasing a fancy watch and was able to negotiate a 22% discount from an authorized dealer— 20% seemed to be the lowest they were willing to go and I got them to throw in an extra $120 to cover my mileage to/from the shop (I drove 3 hours RT), which brought it to 22%. I’m happy, and my guy is happy.
