The faded red / burnt orange color of the original's hands is probably closer to what we got than the one in the Only Watch skeleton.

And yet the Only Watch Monaco rated a COCO score of 7.4, while the rose gold Dark Lord got a 7.2. Go figure? 😵‍💫
I think the new one will probably age better.

On that part I don't agree. The rose gold's hands are a darker red, the skeleton's hands are closer to the original's orange to my eyes.

There are pics of the original where it looks more orange too and also pics of the carbon where it looks more red.

But the rose gold is a darker red regardless.

You know what, they may actually be the same color. Here's a fresh photo of mine.

They're similar. But I don't think I've ever seen pics of the new rose gold's red that can look as orange as the original, like in these pics for example.

Also, the side by side pic you shared earlier shows the rose gold's hands to be a deeper red compared to the orange red of the original. Hence under the same lighting, I do believe the Only Watch Monaco's hands to be a closer match color wise.

Just to be clear, my statement about possibly being the same color was between the Only Watch Skeleton and the new one.

The original Heuer DLs for sure tend to have a lighter, more "orange", tone for sure.

However, well kept specimens, like the one pictured below, appear to have a much darker hue. So my theory is that possibly the color "faded" over time and that's why some that were exposed to the sun became more orange.

If this supposition is right, then that would explain what TH were going for with the new models, because the hands don't look vivid "red" to me, the new color is a subtle "washed out red".

Yes I understood that. However, my point was that the Only Watch's hands can look orange under certain lighting and red orange in other lighting, just like the vintage DL. OTOH, the Titanium rose gold's hands never really look orange, just red. Sometimes a deeper darker red, sometimes a brighter red depending on the lighting.

While you have a valid point, it's impossible to know for sure. Because it's hard to judge based on photos like ^this one alone. Things like lighting, filters and photo touch up etc. can make any color look a little different in a given pic.

A better way to compare is a side by side photo, as in these two pics. Because it's under the same lighting and photographic conditions.

^ All that said, the washed-out red has grown on me. Had I been running the project, I still would pushed for a more faithful homage. However, this will have to do!

Only time will tell, if TH ever decides to do a more faithful re-edition.

@hawkmercedes0417 has the best of both worlds. 😀

I wonder how many who own an original will go for the new one for daily wear?

My guess is that will change at the end of the year. Some people scored it low because it wasn't a Heuer, blah blah... I bet come the end of the year they will have 'accepted' it. Interesting to see them side by side as well, just shows that the new one isn't that much different in size.

Only watch score was probably slanted by my 100/10. I still really like the only watch, but the new one is a great ‘inspired by’ of the dark lord - like a lot of recent TH designs it seems to fall short of greatness, the thickness takes it off my must-buy list, but also the running seconds and contrast between the plain black and asphalt on the dial.

It seems strange they didn’t pick a rally strap for the new one, it’s a very easy way to tie it to the original

Ultimately my favourite is still the dark lord, but the only watch and this are pretty much tieing now.

Speaking of Dark Lord tributes, some of you might remember Joe Ganzler's custom made Dark Lord homage from back in 2012. I remember following his journey on Watchuseek with high interest. He took a Cal 17 blue Monaco and transformed it into his own custom tribute.

DC's recount of the story is here: https://www.calibre11.com/custom-tag-heuer-monaco-pvd/

Now 10 years later we have the official TAG Heuer tribute. But arguably Joe's one of one custom is still the most faithful to date. Albeit he too deliberately chose to use red instead of orange red hands (as noted in DC's article). He also chose to put it on a bracelet rather than a rally strap. Other than those two details, this one is as close as it gets for a modern day take on the original.

On a business trip to Japan at the moment and had the opportunity to try the new Black DLC. Less than impressed. Don’t want to pull it apart as I know some members here have purchased it but needless to say it’s not my bag baby. Great marketing linking it to the Dark lord but I would say it’s a million miles away from a well done tribute. In particular I really didn’t like the Rose Gold but as I say, we all like different things and that’s what makes life interesting.

I saw one through the glass at local ad today. Didn’t have time to pop in and try it on, but it looked nice under the lights. I still can’t get my head around the price point I’m honest.

I agree, I can't justify that sort of money for one watch. 🙁

Not personally a big fan of the new DLC. A bit too black with no contrasts for my taste. The grained effect on the outer dial looks cool though.
