Okay so i asked again today while my wife drooling over a carrera. Yes, i can buy the mechanical calibre5 module without owning the connected first. I don't know why they changed the answer but apparently i can own it now without the smart watch.

I was tempted to do that when i saw the calibre 5 modular in a store the other week, but Im holding out for the connected exchange watch, because Im not a fan of the plastic lugs on the modular.

Think you misunderstood the comments, that's a modular mechanical module, the exchange watch doesn't have the plastic lugs top and bottom. Pictures here: https://forums.calibre11.com/threads/carrera-connected-calibre-5-exchange-watch.38252/
I think you missed my point which was again that the modular module has no restriction and the only restrictions are on gen1 exchange watch
Im not a fan of the plastic lugs on the modular.
The lugs are the modular lugs (titanium, ceramic, gold, diamonds,...), the thing above and below the bezel doesn't feel like plastic to me, it's more like black brushed metal

For me the main appeal is only the flexibility of changing the accesories available. But the H02T modular gonna come out soon too.

Since the Skipper has a flat dial (without the periphery indentation of the Telemeter) the glassbox dome doesn't seem too bad.
Do you have any profile picture/s to see how much the dome protudes?

It is a flat dial as against the (very slight) pie-pan shape of the Telemeter- and that does make a difference. The crystal sits as high as on the Telemeter
