Watch spotting in the pub

This evening I spotted a Speedmaster on a newcomers wrist. So when I went up to bar I said "Nice Speedy, automatic isn't it?" "A present from my mother-in-law in, err, 2000." he said, "But I have to wind it up myself." It clearly was an automatic from the relationship of crown & pushers, so do I say "No, you don't have to wind it." or "It needs a service, which will set you back a lot of pints of beer."?

No, just "Nice watch." If I see him again while wearing mine I'll explain the working of the Speedy Reduced further.

Only other Speedy I have seen on a wrist was a bus ticket inspector in Cambridge. And the only Heuers at organised GTGs.

I'm surprised you haven't seen more, they are fairly common, the guy next to me on this flight is wearing a (I think) seamaster and I caught my boss wearing a early 60s speedy last week. I told him if he ever sells I want first refusal but apparently it was a gift from his uncle.

I've not seen any classic heuers, but tags are very common, there was a guy wearing a horrible 5000 chrono in a meeting this week and I see a lot of aquaracers and a fair few carreras. A mate recently described Tags as a gateway watch.

It wasn't the pub, but I spotted a VC Overseas Chrono whilst walking down the aerobridge to a flight a couple of months ago. It was the brand new model too. The owner was then sitting across the aisle from me, but I didn't really get a chance to strike up a conversation.

I enjoy spotting fakes while moving around.
We're going to spend the holidays in Lebanon today, and usually the Jeddah>Beirut flight promises a lot of poseurs.

In Singapore, on my only visit there, I was offered "fake Omega".

"No thank you, I have a real one."

MRC - are you sure it wasn't the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch? This one is a manual wind and a classic.

That's OK, no worries. The one I saw was the rather rare white dial version. Looked very good.

However, I am getting worried that I can spot a Speedy half concealed on someone's wrist from several metres away 🤔

In Thailand, I tried to spotted watches to but when I went in town spotted tons of Patek Nautilus & Submariner which were all the new model Fake or Not I am not sure. But in my college I saw a student wearing a Speedmaster 1863 which I approach in and said nice watch! Speedmaster! The guy just smiles so I showed him my wrist I was wearing Speedmaster Automatic Reverse Panda. Then I got a watch friend from that conversation. Was a great talk getting a new friend by starting a conversation with the wrist watch he wear.

A friend of mine has the VC overseas world time he bought a short time ago. Not my cup of tea, especially at that sort of money.

the Overseas is one of those watches that look great to you when you first get into watches, but quickly becomes a bit gross once you've developed a sense of taste
