To wind or not to wind? Help please!

Evening all!

So my wife treated me to a stunning Aquaracer Calibre 5 for our wedding.

I work away for 2 months at a time and although I can wear it away and have done, if I leave it at home for 2 months is it best to get a winder? Or is it ok to leave it and just adjust the date and time when I get home?

I dont think watch winders are really needed. After 2 months you'll probably need to reset the time and date anyway. I always let my watches wind down, then when I come to wear them again, a quick shake, set the date/time and good to go again.

I cycle through my watches almost daily, so my autos unwind and need resetting.

Look at an automatic as primarily a mechanical/manually wound watch, a winder would do them no good, so for me a winder is not necessary.

For me, winder is an eye candy, its nice to see but not necessarily needed.

I also reset my watch down to the hour, minute, second and date. It give me pleasure to set the watch. Any interaction between me and my watch, i can appreciate.

But if you are asking whether or not, is it okay to wind an automatic watch to power it when its completely unwind, yes it's okay, but depend on the watch. Some needs counter clockwise turn at position 0. Most are clockwise turn at position 0. Knowing which way to turn is essential as you dont want to damage the mechanism. It could be scary for first watch you havent familiar with but it will get easier in time.

You don’t really need a winder. Let them unwind and by the time you wanna wear it just wind, set and Go! Thats part of having a mechanical watch. Its like a bond between machine and human. I only wind my watch when I want to wear it. Cheers!

I will now leave the calibre 5 auto to wind down and then after 2 months reset etc.

I did email Tag customer service a month ago but they didn’t really say yes or no etc so I was still left wondering. This forum is great and great advice!

There are some very nice winders available, which can be set to rotate at specific intervals and durations.

Advantages of winders:
Keeps the movement evenly lubricated.
Watch always ready.
Removes the stress on manual winder mechanism.
Removes the amount/chances of fine scratches from your fingers around the crown area.

Disadvantages of winders:
Expensive for a good one.
Cheap ones can wind unnecessarily too much.
