Hi im new to this and not going to lie have no clue

Its my husband 60th so am looking for a Monaco, he always moans that the automatics loose time so was looking at a quartz maybe?? I've narrowed down to two watches but I've no idea which is the better or preferred model by experience enthusiasts

So ........................
2018 WAW131A which i believe is a quartz boxed and papers
or
2001 CW2111.auto no box / papers

Both discontinued, lovely watches price varies between £1800-£2500

Any help advice etc would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi Milly
Quartz watches are certainly more reliable and accurate than automatic watches, however there are very few quartz Monacos and most of them are considered ladies or unisex models because they are a bit smaller than the automatic versions. It's only actually 2mm but it is quite noticeable on the wrist, especially if your husband has a large wrist.
Even aside from this pretty much everyone here would tell you to buy the automatic CW2111 because they are 'watch nerds' and to wear quartz is almost shameful.
Hope this helps....
Rob

Aside from what Aquagraph correctly says, above... the other difference is that the quartz is a normal 3-hand (tell the time) watch, whereas the auto is a chronograph model. In other words, it has a stopwatch feature with 3 subdials - this makes it more appealing because of the Monaco's racing history.

Are you buying it from somewhere that will take it back? It might be for the best... even if it's a bit more expensive.

You've put a deposit on the quartz one? Okay, the CW2111 is the model number of the auto and the FC6177 is the part number for the strap.

What I really meant was if your husband doesn't like it, can you return it?

Watches are personal things and even a unisex Monaco is a lot of money, be a shame if he's stuck with something he's not truly happy with.

They just put Steve McQueen on any Monaco to try and attract attention. Steve McQueen Monacos are blue and have a Heuer badge on them, also the crown is on the left hand side.

Can I ask where you are buying from?

Also are they offering any kind of warranty?
Yes this one CW2111.FC6177 has a years (TAG) manufacturers plus 24 month sellers warranty which effectively would only me 12 the other two CW2111.FC6171 and WAW131A have 24 mths sellers warranty

CW2111 refers to the watch. FC6177 and FC6171 to the strap.

So, the general consensus is go with the CW2111 ? Does it matter if the watch is a 2001, 2015 or 2018 is there a "dodgy" mechanical year ? Or what should i be looking out for ?
Any advice is appreciated

For a man, the CW2111 gets my vote. As worn by Watson (played by Martin Freeman) in the TV series Sherlock. 👍
(EDIT: Correction - The picture on the right is the CS2111. Not sure if Watson is wearing the CW2111 or CS2111, they're both similar.)

TAG Heuer has released many different Monacos, but reference CW2111 is only from the early 2000s. The Monacos from 2015 or 2018 are different.
