I saw a note elsewhere that this was a leak to a likely award in the new year Honours list, not a fan of honouring sportspeople, or from a great many other sources, but that's another discussion.
I heard that too. As you say, honouring sportspeole is another debate, but there have been many who have achieved less that have been honoured. He's reached the very top of the sport and broken so many records on the way, it would be fairly inconsistent if they didn't make him a knight of the realm.
Probably worth it, despite the fact that he's been suing the Hamilton Watch Co saying they are infringing upon his name.... despite them being in business since the 1800s
That's simply not true, despite all the comments and headlines otherwise. He (well, his merchandise company) was trying to stop Hamilton watches from registering a European-wide trademark for the name Hamilton to apply to a multitude of goods, not just watches, thus preventing him from using the name on his own accessories. Slightly different to trying to stop them using the name Hamilton on their watches, which he wasn't doing at all.
I don't see why it would prevent him using the name 'Lewis Hamilton' though... even though he's lost I can't see Hamilton having a leg to stand on if he wants to use his full name on goods.
I think the Honour's List should reflect more than just achievement but the person and their influence or their standing as a role model. I don't support LH being given a Knighthood.
It’s understandable LH be given the title of “Sir” or given knighthood from his outstanding achievement in Formula 1. I just hope he stayed in his home country UK and not branded as a “tax exile” by his fellow people. His amassed fortune from the sport and endorsements shouldn’t be above “For Queen and Country.”
I have read that Lewis does pays UK taxes, perhaps not all, ie vat on the private jet but I believe he pays some standard income tax, need to go look for details. I wouldn’t address him as Sir Lewis, ‘Wee Jackie’ didn’t need to called Sir.
Well, whether he does or doesn't pay UK taxes, if he is awarded a Knighthood, it will really cheapen the whole thing.
Right, Nigel Mansell simply purchased the Isle of Man instead! Which was actually cheaper than a Monaco apartment!
The entirety of the Isle of Man is Nigel Mansell's private golf course. All of the 'inhabitants' are actually his personal staff. With all males being known as Manx Mansells, and all women as Manx Womansells. I thought everyone knew that! The annual GDP of the Isle of Man in sterling is equivalent to the factorial of the length of Nigel's mustache in cm!
