Different strokes for different folks.

I just think it looks so much cleaner without what I consider to be a useless appendage. You won't find the rear wiper option on a GT3 or GT3 RS, that's telling you something. 😉

In fairness if there’s a giant wing on the back, lessened visibility from a water droplet covered rear window probably isn’t that big of a deal, but I do like it a lot. When there’s a tailgater in the wet, I can press my little button and see what kind of unevolved creature is driving it, and when you put the car in reverse when its raining, it auto wipes the back so you can see out the back when reverse-parking in the wet. Very convenient when it’s your daily driver and gets miles up a ton.

No rear wiper on the wingless Carrera T or GT3 Touring either. 😉

I'm not knocking the rear wiper's usefulness for those that like it, and I'll admit it does add a quirky old school kind of charm to the 911. But in my case, I'd rarely use it, so much prefer the clean look without it. In the 16 years since I bought my 997, I've never given the rear wiper (or lack of one) a single thought until your post. LOL.

I’ve always been a fan of the practicality and how well it pretends to be a family car. A lot of people say you can’t use the back seats or it can’t fit much and for the 991 which is a bit larger for sure in wheelbase, it’s actually super useful being able to put kids or adults in the back.

Even on longer multi hours long trips the kids are comfy back there with all their iPads, Nintendo Switch and blankets and stuff on the huge rear parcel shelf back there.

I’ve had dudes laugh at how much was in my trolley thinking I’d never fit it all in, but as a long time 911 Tetris player, it always fits.

The car even survived a flash flood that killed a new BMW next to me as the intake is designed rather like the S bend in a toilet and doesn’t let water in. It’s been through a lot and just does such a good impression of a sensible family car despite being a weird rear engined beetle with incredible performance.

Weight saving = more fun!
That’s why I got the slicktop, but most new ones today have the full glass roof at the highest point or the car which is probably a bit more weight

Well, the weight and the endless issues I’ve had with haunted sunroofs in every car prior to this one 😳

Porsche offers lightweight glass as an option on the 911 for this very reason. Which interestingly excludes the rear wiper option if chosen. 😉👌

I don’t think anyone can argue having a wiper motor, arm and linkage is going to be heavier than not having one, so if you’re specing lightweight glass not having a wiper makes sense. If you’re daily driving a 911 over winter with mud and salt on the roads, it’s really useful to be able to see out the back. My 911 is kinda brown right now 😂

Actually, the rear wiper motor assembly is on the order of 2 kilograms. So, if you're going to spec the lightweight glass to save weight, you'd also want to skip the rear wiper for the same reason. Plus, the lightweight glass is thinner and not as strong as the normal glass, so deleting the rear wiper reduces the risk to the thinner glass.

Ah but how much does dirt and beaded water on the rear window weigh? Because you flick the wiper button and all that goes on the Mazda behind you 😉

Wait .... you drive your Porsche in the rain and also when it's dirty? Are you sure you're a real Porsche owner? 😵‍💫🤔

😜😁

Exactly what I was trying to say!

As you can see from the video, I make a child wash it periodically but he’s reluctant. It’s filthy pretty often lol

Ha! Probably the real reason why the rear wiper option isn't that popular in general.

I do drive my 911 in the rain. However, I can't stand to let any of my cars, regardless of make or model, stay dirty for long. As I'm washing cars often, that rear wiper becomes more of a hinderance than anything else for me. 😒

I thought that was standard! I know mine has one, it’s super useful when I was daily driving it over the winter.

My C4S

@dtf, did you change cars? I don't see a rear wiper on your 996 C4S.

Still the same one, although I’m toying with chopping it in for a turbo. If you zoom in loads, you’ll see the spindle for the wiper arm sticking up, the previous owner had removed the arm but not the motor/mechanism. I refitted it when I started daily driving it, I prefer the clean look without it, but not being able to see out the back is a pita!

Ahh, I see the spindle stalk now. Didn't realize on the 996 that the rear wiper arm is attached through the body work. On the 993, 997, 991 and 992 it goes through the glass.

Hadn’t realised that, but looking at Adam’s 997, I see what you mean. I’ll grab a photo of mine tomorrow.
