Following the terrible fire at Notre Dame, LVMH have announced they are donating $200m to the reconstruction work. An amazing act of generosity in this tragic time:

Saw that too, good to see the private sector commit to big philanthropyc pledges during this incalculable cultural loss.

I am optimistic that the reconstruction efforts will bring the best of humanity forward, in order to rebuild the heart of Paris with contributions from all over the world.

It’ll take a while to reconstruct although hopefully not as long as the first build.

I must ask, do they not employ site fire watchers/security guards anymore?

Le Point: What types of precautions against fires were in place in this cathedral, which is today largely destroyed?

Benjamin Mouton: It’s one of the most monitored buildings in our country. In 2010 and 2011, I implemented a rigorous protection protocol for fire risk prevention. Specifically, the protection plan was based on a permanent monitoring system relying on detectors (paying attention to the possible risks of electrical short-circuits), the installation of doors and firewalls, and the presence of two firemen 24 hours a day, making three rounds a day. With the idea being that the sooner the alert was made, the sooner we could intervene. It’s unimaginable, yesterday’s fire spread in an absolutely astounding way!

Good to see LVMH- and Kering Group (Girard-Perregaux, Ulysse Nardin and many fashion brands) putting money back into causes like this

Probably a sprinkler system might have been an idea, not pretty but more effective, so as reported did the French fire service take too long to get on site? or was it just an accident waiting to happen, if other properties learn and prevent further tragedies something good has come of this.
Repair fund is climbing, big sums being promised, hopefully professional firms needed for the repair won’t profiteer from this.

Why are donations needed? Did someone forget to renew the insurance?

I feel enormously the loss of fire, but although I am a Catholic, I believe that in the world there are more needs than giving more 700 million € in a church. There are other needs. and I repeat, I'm Catholic.

I'm not sure I agree. All the money in the world won't solve some problems - it's not the answer to everything. Plus you can take that argument to the extreme and say that there's always going to be a better way to spend it. There may be, but where do you draw the line - nothing else would ever happen, and buildings of beauty would not exist (and they are surely worth something to humankind, witness the outpouring of grief over the fire). A good compromise might be to use the money to put a new roof on that's economical but in keeping with the original and then use any excess for good causes. But don't ruin it by skimping - I sometimes worry this generation will leave nothing of beauty or grandeur behind to inspire future generations.

Don’t fret. We might not inspire the generations to come. But you can be 100% sure we’ll have left many marks to challenge and push their ingenuity to the limits. They’ll not be lacking in challenges with which to test their capacity. They’ll have little time be inspired by fancy buildings.

Lol. Somewhat depressing, but true.

Doesn't the Catholic Church have more money than 'God' anyway? I'm guessing money donated in this way can be written off against tax...

I’d hazard a guess that you’re correct on both counts.
