Luminous Dials and Hands

Hi there,

i have recently started wearing a watch that has been sat in the box for 6 years or so and only been out for a battery change every year. The luminous dials and hands don't stay luminous in the dark for very long. Like no longer than 10 minutes. Will this increase as I wear the watch more or has it 'worn out'? Or does the of the hands and dials not last very long in general

Also does anyone think my watch would be majorly benefitted by a re-polish? Or does it look okay


I have just bought the watch and it is my first Swiss watch and I have saved for a while being only 18

Hard to say on the lume. It does get less effective over time, but I would expect it to be functional after 6 years. Nearly all lume dims substantially after a few minutes though. It really needs to be pitch black for you to assess properly. I find even new watches struggle to make it through the night, plus Tag is not renowned for being the brightest.

Your watch looks nice and in reasonable condition. If I was being critical, the bezel is a bit scratched, particularly on the left hand side. Only you know whether you want to spend the money on polishing or a new bezel. Sometimes a good clean works wonders.

I find on my Aquagraph the lume is extremely bright to start with but very quickly dies down, that watch is probably a little older than yours even though I purchased it 'new' in 2013. As imagwai said, while the super bright lume sells the watch, it never really stays like that for long, but should be readable in 'fully dark' conditions for a few hours - probably not all the way through the night though in my expereince, even on my Heuer 01.

tritium lasts around 25 years but is also mildly radioactive (lol)

I don't think lume was ever TH strong point.
Divers from Seiko really have a lasting lume, but even that fades away.
