Received this email today, with the subject line "Go Beyond the Edge", teasing their lineup at Watches & Wonders starting Apr 7th.

So yeah we can see the little Aquaracer caseback insignia there, but I just cannot allow this to pass without saying that hopefully this means that the TAG Heuer Edge will finally get its time in the sun! 😜

Yup same here. It’s the new model Aquaracer! I’m pretty sure they’ll keep the Aquaracer name 😉 Been synonymous with TAG Heuer ever since. I’m just wondering if a new movement is in place. 👍

Same old Calibre 5 I believe.
At least it will keep the cost down a little.

That would be awesome!

From what I've read, it is still a Calibre 5, still a Sellita SW200 base.

Thanks sir @abrod520 👍 Just a question to you guys, If Sellita is doing ETA movement, does it mean Swiss watch manufacturers doesn’t need to worry about ETA restricting them of their movements since Sellita is obviously around?

I thought “eventually” TAG Heuer will be relying on its own movement (3-hand and chrono) so as not to depend on ETA movement production.

Well while the Sellita SW200 is a clone of the 2824, it's not quite the same level of quality so I wouldn't say they're "making ETA movements." However yes, Sellita is now the go-to supplier of Swiss movements for micros and other brands who don't want to develop their own movements (or their own 3-hand movement in the case of most of the larger brands), and they aren't going to be restricting supply anytime soon.

I’m thinking this might be so. TAG Heuer ditched the Calibre Heuer01/1887 since Calibre16 is still around. I remember a few years back, there was a push from TAG Heuer to be self reliant (JC Babin era) and reason for the new factory/workshops etc. But it might be more profitable to just continue with Calibre16 than make Heuer01. Besides, only the minority watch nerds care about these stuff and majority of the market doesn’t even know or care about the difference, I guess 😵‍💫

The 1887 is such a nice movement though. I love its operation compared with the Calibre 16 (7750).

Seems like one of TAGs eternal problems is that they can't decide what they want to be. Babin wanted TAG to be upmarket with haute horology halo products, JCB wanted it to be entry level... but then introduces a tourbillon (albeit an entry level tourbillon) these are fundamentals of brand identity, surely.

Agree with this. It's very hard to be all things to all people.

I firmly believe the brand is in a good place for “entry-level” Swiss watches. Alof of WIS guys I know really started from TAG Heuer until they are more financially capable and went on to the likes of Rolex, Omega
etc. Some even ventured to AP, VC & PP. I don’t like spending ridiculous amount of money to something that doesn’t connect to me so I stayed well true to the brand. Since TAG Heuer is the only brand well entrenched into motorsports at the outset. Some brands have tried but not as the depth and long history of Heuer/TAG Heuer in motorsports.

I was already a fan of the brand even before and I can definitely see the push to make itself more self reliant through the years and have equipped itself the capacity to produce outstanding watches. What separated TAG Heuer from other brands is that although it is considered an “entry level”, it was the most AVANT GARDE, pushing the limits and boundaries of watchmaking and technology. Being disruptive and innovative. By making a tourbillon, it doesn’t mean TAG Heuer is now catering to the upper high end market, but to me, TAG Heuer is just flexing and showing to the world, what Avant Garde is all about. I doubt they even make huge profits from these. But probably those people in this tourbillon price range can now have a second look at TAG Heuer. Over-priced Rolex Submariner (with lots of replicas/fake) or a TAG Heuer Carrera Tourbillon? Makes you really think twice.

I think I'm missing something, noticed that several other watch brands are making announcements on Apr 7th (also Apr 6th). What is it about that date? Is next week some kind of virtual Basel replacement?

Yes - Basel is all but done for, and the brands have instead come together to create a new show called Watches & Wonders. Virtual now, maybe in person in years to come. Should be really interesting though!

The two threads probably need merging, but I’ll put this here.
