Other than the S2000 and Miata MX-5 both being open top cars, the two drive very differently, and I do not feel were direct competitors in the market. The Miata is probably the most fun you can have while driving slow, while the S2000 wants to be driven hard - IMHO.

My Honda comes alive at 6K rpm when the mx is out of puff? Had a run around the Scottish Borders today in the sun, not particularly fast but keeping average speed high, not so much fun on the Edinburgh by pass coming home sitting in slow moving traffic level with hgv exhausts, win most, loose some.

Not saying one is better than the other, they just have different personalities. I agree that the S2000 comes alive at a higher rev line, which is part of the fun. But that's why I felt the car needs to driven hard and I'd find myself running out of road when trying to approach its redline.

I've owned many cars that are much faster and track capable than the Miata MX-5, but most needed to be driven on a race track for the performance to be fully experienced. The Miata, while slower, was just a super fun car and very enjoyable for everyday driving.

Hondas do come alive after 6000rpm. I have a white Type R FN2. It's a naturally aspirated 2.0L revving to 8600rpm. It's a project car and I have since turbocharged it. The feeling of the vtec kick with the turbo kicking in is something else 馃グ I also run out of road quite quickly, but it's fun to drive in low and high revs!

When I worked in Honda dealer I was the lucky sod who got sent to pick up/deliver a customers NSX, didn鈥檛 live too near so I got a decent drive regularly as Bob was perfectionist who got the car checked at any reason, nice guy, had some interesting chats.
No power steering and low speed tight manoeuvring wasn鈥檛 a joy, but I would have suffered that, definite licence loosing performance.
I believe there was a type R version made in very small numbers.
