With the recent release of the latest Red Bull watch, I thought it would be fun to have a thread on all the F1 Team watches.

The Marlboro McLaren Era 1986-1996

I'll start with the OG TAG Heuer Formula 1, chosen as the first Marlboro McLaren Team watch from 1986-1989. Ref 385.513 was perfectly matched to the Marlboro livery. Worn by the pit crew and mechanics.
From 1990-1991 and part of '92, the F1 Chrono ref 472.513 became the McLaren Team watch.
Then sometime in 1992, the F1 Chrono ref 571.493 (bracelet) became the next McLaren Team watch.
It seemed to remain the McLaren Team watch throughout the rest of the Marlboro sponsored era. As I still noticed it in pictures like this one from 1996, the last season before West tobacco sponsorship took over.

In addition to McLaren, the OG Formula 1 was also the team watch of Tyrrell in 1990. Ref 387.513, as I previously shared in this thread:

The West McLaren Mercedes Era 1997-2006

One might think that with TAG Heuer's release of the Series 2 Formula 1 watches in '97, that it would've been adopted that same year as the McLaren team watch. But such was not the case, the Series 1 ref 571.493 was still being worn by the crew in '97-'98, its silver and black color scheme being a nice match for the new West livery.

The Mclaren team did adopt the Formula1 Series 2 ref. CA1211.BA0493 in the '99 season. It looks very similar to its predecessor, but the red hands and red accent in the 6 o'clock register visually differentiates it. I don't know if I should technically call it a "team watch", as McLaren members seemed to wear a variety of TAGs in this time period. Unlike the '80s or early '90s, when they all wore the same TAG F1 as a part of their team uniforms.

TAG Heuer would cease production of the Formula1 at the end of the '90s, but after a 4-year hiatus, the Series 3 Formula1 was introduced. It was immediately adopted as the McLaren team watch in 2004. The 3-hander Ref WAC1111.BA0850 became the next team watch, as the crew returned to form wearing the same TAG F1 model.

The Series 3 Formula1 is somewhat synonymous with Kimi Raikkonen, as he gave input into the design. Most notably the rubber guards on the sides of the case. Perhaps a cool feature back then, but they haven't withstood the test of time. The rubber on mine has deteriorated with age, albeit the watch is 20 years old now.

The above pictures show it being worn in 2004, 2005 and 2006, the last year of West sponsorship.

Vodafone's red & sliver livery would come the following year in 2007. But what about the McLaren Team watches? Stay tuned for my next post.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Era 2007-2013

In 2007, Vodafone took over as McLaren's title sponsor. For me, the Vodafone McLaren era was the last of the team's glory years. In a break from tradition, the new team watch was not a Formula1, it was in fact a Link!!! 😲 Ref. CJ1111.BA0576, a silver chrono.
CJ1111.BA0576

The Series 4 Formula1 line up was introduced 2007, in 2008 it joined the Link as the team watch. The chosen model being the white dial chrono on rubber strap ref. CAH1111.BT0714.
CAH1111.BT0714

In 2009, the team continued to wear both the aforementioned F1 CAH1111.BT074 and the Link CJ1111.BA0576 from the previous years.
However, in 2010 came another surprise, it was the Aquaracer's turn! 😲 Ref. CAF101A.BA0821 was worn during 2010-2011 as the team watch.
CAF101A.BA0821

In 2012, TAG Heuer introduced the Series 5 Formula1, and as expected, it became the McLaren team watch that same year. The all black dial chrono on rubber strap, ref. CAU1110.FT6024, as the team's standard issue.
CAU1110.FT6024

The Series 5 Formula1 would close out the Vodafone era and indeed the TAG Heuer x McLaren era.

TAG Heuer x McLaren - The Final Years
The end of an era: 2014 would be the last year of Mercedes power since first partnering with McLaren in 1995. Back with Honda again in 2015, McLaren hoped to rekindle the magic of their golden years. However, they struggled instead. Sadly, 2015 also marked the end of McLaren's nearly 30-year partnership with TAG Heuer. 🙁

The Series 5 Formula1 ref CAU1115.BA0858 (gray dial) was worn in 2014-2015.

Please note that all of this is based on my own personal watch spotting from reviewing tons of pics and cross-referencing against resources like TAG Heuer's catalogues, TAG's website, & @Aquagraph's blog etc. to ID the watches and reference numbers.

While I've tried to be very accurate, this is an unofficial account based on my own research. Any additions or corrections are welcome.

Next up, the Red Bull x TAG Heuer era begins...

What watch is this? It looks a bit like a Carrera, but it looks like it has a grey right hand subdial. Also no tachymetre on the bezel?

CV2A84, launched on a boat during Dubai watch week thingy IIRC. The grey sub dial is the day-date display

Red Bull Racing

Following @Jim Dollares's excellent blog post about the past Red Bull Edition watches, I'd like to clarify for the intents & purposes of this thread, my definition of a Team Watch. A "team watch" is one that is worn almost uniformly by the team at large as an extension of their team attire (with exceptions for the drivers and top management). This was the approach taken by McLaren, but at Red Bull things are a little different.

The pre-Max championship years: 2016-2020
TAG Heuer's new partnership with Red Bull Racing began at the start of the 2016 F1 season. TAG also launched their current gen, Series 6 Formula1 roughly around the same time. Hence, I had thought the new F1 would've become the team watch of RB, especially when the first Red Bull Racing F1 watch was released. However, this was not the case.

While the Drivers and Leadership members wore a variety of TAGs, the rest of the team seemed to wear whatever they pleased. Unlike McLaren, Red Bull did not seem to have any dress code for watches when it came to the crew in the trenches. So basically, there was no singular team watch during these first 5 seasons IMHO.

Many members didn't even wear a wristwatch.

For those that did wear watches, many wore other brands, such as the G-Shock shown below.

Those that actually did wear TAG Heuer seemed to be in the minority, especially during the first season in 2016. But with each season, I noticed more and more TAGs being worn. While there still was no standard, the Formula1 and Connected were popular choices.

Pictured below, from 2018, a member wears a black F1 (left) and also what I believe is the Connected E2 Red Bull Racing (right).

The Max Championship era: 2021-Present
Starting in 2021, things began to change a little. While Red Bull still did not seem to enforce a dress code for watches, I did notice that a new Connected was worn by quite a few members that year. Take note of the two members in the bottom left of this group pic, taken at Abu Dhabi 2021 when Max clinched his first WDC.

I also noticed this watch being worn by others in the crew. E.g.

At first glance, it seems to be a blue bezel E3 Connected SGB8A11. However, look closely at the straps.
The strap doesn't appear to be the normal blue rubber Connected strap. To me, the strap looks similar to the Red Bull Racing Leather strap from the E2 Connected RB edition. Could this watch have been a special issue done for the Red Bull team? An E3 Connected with a custom Red Bull leather strap? (See my mockup below.) What do our Connected experts have to say? If this watch was a special custom issue, I'd classify it a team watch, even though it wasn't worn ubiquitously by the team.

Then in 2022, TAG Heuer released the 3rd Red Bull Racing edition F1 watch ref CAZ101AL.FT8052. I noticed quite a few members wearing the new F1. But others still wore the Connected and other watches, or were watch-less. So almost a team watch (maybe) but not quite, at least not like the McLaren era.

In 2023, the crew continued to wear various TAGs, non-TAGs and no watch at all.

The above group pic is from Japan 2023, with RB clinching the Constructor's championship. Note the member on the far left wearing the RB F1, next to him another member wears a Connected on blue rubber, second from the right wearing another RB F1 and far right wearing what looks like an Apple iWatch.

To celebrate his record achieving 2023 WDC, Max Verstappen commissioned TAG Heuer to make a special RB World Champions F1 watch. This was given as a thank you gift to the team members around early March 2024. I consider this to be a team watch, since the whole team got one. However, I've not been able to spot any of the crew wearing one during this 2024 F1 season yet. Perhaps too special & rare to be worn daily at work.

Finally at the 2024 Miami GP, most members would wear the KITH-Heuer F1 as a kind of "team watch". But it was a onetime thing, done purely for promotion of the KITH x TAG Heuer Formula1 re-issue. And I don't believe the team got to keep the KITH watches, as I never saw them worn again. Thus, I'm hesitant to classify the KITH-Heuer F1 as an "official" team watch.

To close things out where I began (in my first post at the very top), TAG Heuer released a new E4 Connected Red Bull Racing edition ref SBR8A80.EB0365 in mid Aug '24. The only race since the watch release was the Italian GP and I did spot at least one crew member wearing the latest RB Connected watch. I'll be watch spotting the crew the rest of the season to see if more members start wearing this latest RB TAG.

Re the Max Verstappen championship watch, when I visited the factory I asked about it and they said no one wears them, they are all kept at home.

Yes, Max is wearing this one again at Baku this GP weekend. My favorite glassbox. 😀

Christian Horner is also wearing his 39mm glassbox again this race weekend. Perhaps the conservative Carrera glassbox is simply more to their personal liking compared to the avant-garde skeleton designs of the Split Seconds Monaco and Carbon Monza that were respectively given to them by TAG? 😗

Hi @Mspeedster !

I think this blue strap on the E3 Connected is the standard rubber strap BT6220, because the strap in your picture has the same protruding TAG Heuer logo of the rubber strap, while the Connected leather straps have no protruding nor printed logos

Thanks Albert, I saw that logo shape too. You might very well be right. But isn't it possible that TAG did a custom leather E3 strap with the logo embossment?

Three other reasons why I suspect it might be custom is: (1) the color looks like a darker blue, (2) I can't see the holes normally visible on the standard rubber and (3) it seems like it might have red stitching on edges. OTOH, it's hard to say because of the dark lighting. Might be my eyes playing tricks.

I've tried to brighten up these pics of the strap which I think might be custom, from 2021:

Compared to this pic from 2023, with a strap that's clearly the standard blue rubber.

I'm still not sure, could be the standard one or custom IMHO. In either case, the Connected has been a popular choice amongst the RB crew.

I found another picture of the same member from the 2021 pic I showed before (below). Gianpiero Lambiase, who is Max's race engineer, shown on the left.
abu-dhabi-2021-jpg.1837463
This new picture show's him on the podium of the 2021 French GP, collecting the constructors' trophy. (Max won the race.)

Clearly, it's the standard blue rubber strap in this pic. So @Albert-AMG is correct! 👍
