FORMULA 1 QTZ WAC1113/0 - Bumper Issues

I have a TAG Formula 1 WAC1113/0 in Red - it's around 20 years old.

The watch suffers from the common issue of the deterioration of the bumpers though to be fair I've seen far worse. I did send it to TAG for a quotation to repair (replace case middle) inc a service and also a new bezel which worked out at £520 inc VAT. I decided not to authorise the repair.

Now in terms of keeping time the watch hasn't missed a beat but I am now conscious of the fact if I wear it a lot it will continue to deteriorate cosmetically. If I had gone through with the repair then a few years down the line I'd be back in the same situation with a repair even more difficult due to scarcity of parts.

Given how common this problem is I am quite surprised that TAG didn't commission a limited run of all metal case middles and offer this as a more robust repair to owners. I know this would technically make the watch a 'hybrid' if that mod was done but I want a watch I can use and now I don't feel that I have that.

I've owned a similar model since 2004, purchased new. The problem is one of age, not how often you wear it.

I wore mine constantly for the first 6 years and never had a problem. Then I put it away in storage, as I had moved on to other watches. It sat there for about 8 years, basically untouched. When I took it out of storage, that's when I first noticed that the rubber guards had self-deteriorated with age.

Although it's a common problem, by the time the issue became widely known, TAG Heuer had already moved on to newer revisions of their F1 watch.

It's difficult to know exactly what to do with the watch, I'm not super OCD about everything being perfect as I realise things do age but the bumpers are beginning to look ugly. It's also not my only watch though it's my only one which would be classed as premium.

I'm afraid there isn't a good cost-effective solution. One possible option is to find someone who could craft replacement parts using a 3D printer.

One member was looking into creating a bezel replacement for his F1, not sure if he ever finished the project.
