Discard the chronograph module during service?

Spoke to a local watchmaker the other day about service of Tags in my hometown. Apparently they do it and are in fact an AD so thats good news.

However he told me that when servicing a chronograph like the Monaco they only service the base movement and the chronograph module is discarded and replaced with a brand new one.

Is this true?

In a longer perspective it does not sound very promising if the whole watch cant be serviced. What happens if they stop manufacturing the particular module in 20 years for example.

I'd be surprised if the old chrono module is discarded completely. More likely it's sent off somewhere to be refurbished and may end up in another watch at some point. On the other hand, maybe the time to service it simply makes it uneconomical? If you really wanted one serviced, then I'm sure you could find a watchmaker to do it, though.
