The carrera is nice but i dont understand why they made it gold with quartz.

Can they just made steel version with quartz (actually, NO, no carrera should be made quartz ever)
And the gold version with calibre 5

If they do that it would make my life 1 year easier of what birthday gift i should wrap for my wife.

Just my 2 cents....

That is what stopped me buying one of the other lady carreras for my wife, it was quartz for automatic money. However I've talked this over with her since and she can't see the point of auto, she wants to be able to pick up and wear her watch, rather than having to wind and set it. She said something like "auto keeps worse time, is more fragile and I have to mess around setting if I don't wear it for a few days, why is it more expensive?"

Apart from female watch geeks (who I assume are as deluded about autos as we are), I suspect quartz is preferable to most women.

Of course she is right (even the same can be said for man's watch), no doubt about it. Even $1.000.000 Richard Mille accuracy is not on par with $50 quartz watch in terms of accuracy. But i still prefer mechanical, and luckly my wife prefer mechanical as well. I guess it's just down to preferance.

By the way if anyone want a good, relatively cheap quartz watch i would recommend trying Undone Watch.

Absolutely, I prefer auto too (and my wife has one auto piece - the key is to get something without a date!) but there's no real 'argument' to be made for mechanical other than it's 'nicer'. Actually if you think about it, mechanical has done very well to maintain it's place. Not many billion pound industries can be based on redundant technology. That said I do love my Calibre S, and my quartz pieces too.

Well to be fair, the whole mechanical thingy is build on the premises of "build to last" or in other words "never need to change battery or visit your local watchmaker ever again"
but i think even mechanical needs maintenance as well.
Guess what, one of my acquintance have a JLC Extreme Lab, the watch that they said never need oiling or maintenance forever...not long after that...the chrono pusher stop working and the inevitable visit to service center happened 😁.
In reality you cannot escape maintenance, quartz or mechanical. But i just prefer mechanical. Some people prefer quartz, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

It's a nice idea to have no maintenance ever, but it's probably not realistic.

I like both, but I can't say I prefer quartz, it's more practical but it's not the same. If I was a bit wealthier that I could wear a mechanical watch every day without worrying about it then I might be more inclined to do so.

As far as I know there was a massive promotional effort done by the swiss watch industry in the 70ies to save the mechanical movements from the so called Quarz-crisis. They managed to associate the automatic movement not only with not having to bother with batteries but also with attributes as eternity and having a soul, in opposition to impending obsolence and soulless electronics. Interestingly and contrasting the stereotype women seem to tend to the soulless, cold, rational battery thing more than to a thing you have to care for. 😀
But I dare to suppose that the price tag might be even more important than the movement to some of them! 😉

I certainly appreciate quartz, and more so since I have owned automatic watches. The fact that a standard quartz movement is more accurate over its 7 year battery lifetime than a mechanical movement is in a month is incredible (Numbers off the tag website, assuming max negative deviation, quartz would loose 84s in 7 years, mechanical would lose 150s in 30 days). Certainly this seems like an engineering achiement that should be celebrated, rather than regarded as the cheap cousin!

Personally my quartz aquaracer is my goto watch, partly because when I pick it up, it will be telling the correct time, plus it's tough enough that I won't damage it but smart enough I can dress it up, but subtle enough I can wear it anywhere.
