Just an idle thought for discussion :

How many times so you think members of this little community have bidded against each other for an item on eBay (or elsewhere) without being aware of it?

Has it ever happened when someone posts about successfully bidding over the odds for something special and you've realised that you were the unlucky one that time? Does it annoy you, or is that "just part of the game"?

Just part of the game - part of the fun really. Many times it's nice to see the watch is at least in the hands of someone you know will enjoy it, and you can have a laugh about bidding against each other and request dibs if they ever sell it on 😉

What is not OK is when you nab something for a really great price, and someone from the community scoops it from you by messaging the seller and offering a higher price before they have a chance to ship it.

Is that not also part of the game? - not that I’d ever buy from ebay myself. But surely common sense is to keep the deal qt until it is sealed. Negotiation 101 I thought. This website is public and a rather obvious place to come for intel I’s imagine. Just a thought. Apologies it it sounds critical. I appreciate there’s a community here and it is a very quiet forum. But in reality not many truly know the other.

No, I mean after the sale or auction is closed, and paid. There are people who, instead of trying to be quicker next time, will message the seller asking them to cancel the transaction if they pay more. Some sellers will stick by their word (and eBay's terms of service), others can't quite turn away an extra couple hundred or thousand dollars.

Bad form. But that’s capitalism for you. Money talks.

I would say it is the seller that it's being reprehensible rather than the person emailing to offer more money. Although that is cheeky. The seller should be honest and say they have already entered into a contractual agreement.

I've only bought 1 complete Tag Heuer watch from Ebay. And a handful of spare parts. I was so worried about the authenticity of the watch, I spent ages comparing photos, and took it to my boutique once I'd received it. I'm 99% convinced it's real! Stressful! But with all the hard to spot fakes on Ebay in the last couple of years, I think I've been scared off for good.

eBay is the perfect marketplace IMO - knowledge, research, and decisiveness are rewarded as greatly as ignorance is punished. Just have to know how to spot what you're hunting for!

This is true. My true collector's knowledge is in vinyl records. I don't know enough about watches!
